Op aarde is slechts een theelepel neutronenster
zou zes miljard ton wegen. Zes miljard ton
is gelijk aan het gezamenlijke gewicht van elk dier
op aarde. Inclusief de insecten. Maal drie.
Zes miljard ton klinkt onmogelijk
totdat ik bedenk hoe het is om verdriet te slikken—
slechts een theelepel en je had het net zo goed kunnen consumeren
een neutronenster. Hoe dicht is het,
hoe het de herinnering aan de ineenstorting in zich draagt.
Wat is het dan moeilijk om te bewegen.
Hoe onmogelijk is het om te geloven dat er ook maar iets is
dat gewicht kon tillen.
Er zijn veel redenen om elkaar goed te behandelen
met grote tederheid. Een is
het pure wonder dat we hier samen zijn
op een planeet omringd door stervende sterren.
Eén daarvan is dat we niet kunnen zien wat
iemand anders heeft het ingeslikt.
