整理衣柜时,我发现了一个红蓝绿三色的手工编织小袋子,顶部有银色拉链。这是我高中最后一年的英语老师玛西亚斯女士送给我的,当时距离我去危地马拉——这个袋子的产地——还有十五年。我记得每天上课,我都坐在教室右侧玛西亚斯女士的办公桌旁,挨着我最好的朋友蒂娅。我们俩会不停地问她各种关于生活和青少年关心的事情。她总是很乐意和我们聊天。
有一天,她从办公桌上拿出一个小小的编织包,走到我的桌前问我喜不喜欢。我说它很漂亮。她说:“这是送给你的。” 到现在,我已经拥有它21年了。有时候我会忘记它的存在,但很多时候,它又会回到我的包里,装着生活中的小物件。我从未过多地想起它,尽管它已经老旧不堪,但我从未把它扔掉,即使它和我其他的东西完全不搭。
打扫卫生时,我注意到我没有把一个破旧的小袋子放到捐赠箱里,丈夫尼蓬觉得这是老师很贴心——也很不寻常——的举动。“你觉得她为什么把袋子给你?”他问。我有点懵,这个问题我之前从来没想过。“你觉得她为什么把袋子给你而不是给别人?”他又问了一遍。高中时期,我并没有觉得自己有什么特别之处,所以肯定不是因为这个。我一时语塞,不知如何作答。
最近我和一位在高中教书的朋友聊天时,我突然意识到,麦西亚斯女士的眼光远不止于我们相处的这段时间。她知道我的家人和她一样,都是移民到美国的。我确信她注意到我只有几套衣服,而且总是轮着穿。麦西亚斯女士是一位非常注重衣着打扮的女士,她总是把鞋子和裙子搭配得恰到好处,头发和指甲也总是精心打理。我记得十几岁的时候,我曾问过她为什么总是穿得这么讲究。后来我才知道,麦西亚斯女士出身寒微,如今她虽然能享受一些简单的乐趣,却也因此决定尽情享受,因为她有能力这样做。她的故事,以及她为人处世的方式,或许在我心中埋下了一颗自信的种子,激励我成为一个独立自主的女性。她给予我的这份小小的礼物,也提醒了我人生的真谛——珍惜一切,努力实现自己的理想,并乐于分享。
仅仅是想起麦西亚斯女士,就让我心中涌起一股怀旧的感激之情。这让我不禁反思,我生命中究竟有多少影响过我,而我却从未真正意识到。那些在我想要隐身时依然关注我的老师,那些在我害怕在全班同学面前发言时依然相信我的老师。那些即便我一心扑在成长和自己生活上而无暇回报他们的叔叔阿姨们,他们依然爱着我。那些无论我多么严厉都依然爱着我的兄弟姐妹们。那些凌晨两点仍会接我电话,而我也随时都会接听的挚友们。那些抽出时间传授我知识的领导们。那些人生中懂得无条件去爱的长辈们,这或许是每个人都有幸见证的最美好的事情。那些我有幸结识的僧侣和智者们,他们的智慧如同路标,指引着我前行的方向。
我觉得我们每个人都像是在一个村庄里长大的。就像我六岁的小侄女坚信的那样,“所有爱我的人都是我的大家庭!” 和她一样,我内心深处也知道,这些人都是我的家人。而且,我至今仍在接受着老少咸宜的关爱和养育。
值此佳节之际,我想向我庞大的家族致以最诚挚的问候,感谢他们指引我前行,给予我无微不至的关爱,这份恩情我永远无法回报。我唯一能做的,就是向世上所有像麦西亚斯女士一样的人深深鞠躬,表达我由衷的感激之情,她们总是抽出时间关注身边人的需求。或许这段视频比我的言语更能表达我的心意:

Thank you Daily Good for being part of my Big Huge Family. And thank you Guri for sharing your story, several teachers made a HUGE impact on my life and continue to make an impression long after being within their classroom walls. Mrs Carthew was one of them, high school Drama teacher who saw a spark in me. Another was professor Roberta Crisson (with whom I've reconnected on facebook :)) Both set the course for who I am now as a Cause Focused Storyteller. Truly grateful they saw in me what I could not see myself.
