내 비행기가 4시간 동안 연착되었다는 소식을 듣고,
나는 다음과 같은 발표를 들었습니다.
4-A 게이트 근처에 있는 사람 중에 아랍어를 이해하는 사람이 있으면,
즉시 게이트로 와주세요.
음, 요즘은 좀 멈칫하곤 합니다. 4-A 게이트가 제 게이트였거든요. 제가 거기로 갔거든요.
팔레스타인의 전통 의상을 입은 나이든 여성,
할머니가 입으셨던 것과 똑같은 옷이 바닥에 구겨져 큰 소리로 울부짖고 있었습니다.
도와주세요. 승무원이 말했습니다. 그녀에게 말하세요. 그녀의
문제가 있나요? 우리는 그녀에게 비행기가 4시간 늦을 것이라고 말했고 그녀는
이렇게 했습니다.
나는 그녀의 어깨에 팔을 두르고 머뭇거리며 말을 이었다.

그녀가 아는 단어들을 듣는 순간, 아무리 잘못 사용하더라도
그녀는 울음을 멈췄다.
그녀는 우리 항공편이 완전히 취소되었다고 생각했습니다.
그녀는 주요 의료 치료를 위해 엘파소에 가야 했습니다.
다음 날. 나는 안 된다고, 안 된다고, 우리는 괜찮을 거라고, 넌 도착할 거라고, 다만 늦을 뿐이라고 말했어.
누가 데리러 올 거야? 전화해서 말해.
우리는 그녀의 아들을 불렀고, 나는 그와 영어로 통화했습니다.
나는 그에게 비행기에 탑승할 때까지 그의 어머니와 함께 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
그녀 옆에서 사우스웨스트를 타고 갈 거예요.
그녀는 그와 이야기를 나누었고, 우리는 그냥 재미 삼아 그녀의 다른 아들들을 불러 모았습니다.
그런 다음 우리는 아빠에게 전화했고 아빠와 아빠는 잠시 아랍어로 통화했습니다.
물론 그들에게는 공통된 친구가 10명이나 있다는 걸 알게 됐죠.
그러다가 그냥 재미 삼아 팔레스타인 사람을 불러서
제가 아는 시인들을 만나서 이야기를 나누게 했어요. 이 모든 게 다 합쳐서 두 시간 정도 걸렸어요.
그때쯤 그녀는 많이 웃고 있었다. 자신의 삶에 대해 이야기하며. 대답하며
질문.
그녀는 집에서 만든 마물 쿠키 한 자루를 꺼냈습니다.
그녀의 가방에서 나온 대추와 견과류가 들어간 부서지기 쉬운 설탕 덩어리
그리고 문에 있는 모든 여자들에게 그것을 주더군요.
놀랍게도 단 한 명의 여성도 거절하지 않았습니다. 마치
성찬. 아르헨티나에서 온 여행자, 캘리포니아에서 온 여행자,
라레도 출신의 사랑스러운 여성—우리 모두는 같은 것에 덮여 있었습니다.
슈가파우더. 그리고 미소. 이보다 더 좋은 쿠키는 없어.
그리고 항공사는 거대한 냉장고에서 무료 음료를 꺼냈습니다.
비알코올—그리고 우리 비행기에 탑승한 두 명의 어린 소녀, 한 명은 아프리카계
미국인 한 명, 멕시코계 미국인 한 명이 우리 모두에게 사과 주스를 제공하기 위해 돌아다녔습니다.
레모네이드도 있었고, 가루 설탕도 뿌려져 있었어요.
그리고 나는 내 새로운 가장 친한 친구를 알아차렸습니다. 이제 우리는 손을 잡고 있었습니다.
그녀의 가방에서 화분에 심은 식물이 튀어나와 있었는데, 약용 식물이었어요.
푸르고 털이 많은 잎사귀들. 아주 오래된 시골 여행의 전통이지. 언제나
식물을 가지고 다니세요. 항상 어딘가에 뿌리를 내리고 있어야 합니다.
그리고 나는 늦고 지친 자들의 그 문 주위를 둘러보며 생각했습니다.
이것이 내가 살고 싶은 세상이다. 모두가 공유하는 세상.
이 문에는 단 한 사람도 없었다. 혼란의 울음소리가 그치자
—다른 사람에 대해서도 불안해하는 것처럼 보였습니다.
그들은 쿠키를 가져갔어요. 다른 여자들도 꼭 안아주고 싶었어요.
이런 일은 어디서나 일어날 수 있습니다.
모든 것이 사라진 것은 아닙니다.

If we enjoy each other openly, one person at a time, how could we not love and live in peace and harmony.
Loved this story. Have just recently performed my first croning ceremony (and was initially cynical) but it was a wonderful celebration of the unity of all women. Now another indication that there need be no barriers: religion, age, culture or language, if we keep an open mind and heart
I went to Israel two years ago and had the opportunity to sit down and talk with a 65 year old Palestinian women for an hour. While in Jerusalem we stayed at a hotel in the Muslim district. I looked at all the women and felt so connected to their joys, sorrows, and experiences as women of different faiths. This trip also made me to live in a "shared world."
Outstanding! This is what my 4 yr old latino grandchild would say. He is learning English from watching the English funnies. God bless all of those people that passed the story on. Like you say, there are lots of wonderful people arround.
Thank you for this moving story of the true nature of people. I especially enjoyed the part about carrying a plant to stay rooted. My wife came to the US from Colombia carrying a plant.

Thank you for the heart warming story. It makes me wonder how would the world be if there were no language barriers, how many misunderstandings could be avoid, how much love could be shared? The beauty of this story is to imagine how many ripples it caused and the impact it had in each of those who were part of this beautiful chain of acts kindness.
