Sprehod Ob Strahu

Kaj vam vzbuja občutek strahospoštovanja? Beseda strahospoštovanje – občutek, da ste v prisotnosti nečesa ogromnega, kar presega vaše razumevanje sveta – se pogosto povezuje z izjemnim. Morda si predstavljate, da stojite ob 106 metrov visokem drevesu ali na prostrani ravnini, kjer se bliža nevihta, ali da slišite električno kitaro, ki polni prostor arene, ali da držite droben prst novorojenčka. Strahospoštovanje nas preseneti: spomni nas, da obstajajo sile, večje od nas samih, in razkriva, da naše trenutno znanje ni kos nalogi, da bi razumeli to, s čimer smo se srečali.

Vendar pa za občutenje strahospoštovanja niso potrebne izjemne okoliščine. Ko smo s kolegi udeležence raziskave prosili, naj v dnevnik zapisujejo izkušnje strahospoštovanja, smo na naše presenečenje ugotovili, da so ga ljudje v povprečju občutili nekaj več kot dvakrat na teden. In našli so ga v vsakdanjem: v velikodušnosti prijatelja, v igri svetlobe in sence listnatega drevesa na pločniku, v pesmi, ki jih je ponesla nazaj v prvo ljubezen.

To vsakdanje strahospoštovanje potrebujemo, tudi če ga odkrijemo na najskromnejših mestih. Pregled ustreznih študij kaže, da lahko kratek odmerek strahospoštovanja zmanjša stres, zmanjša vnetja in koristi srčno-žilnemu sistemu. Na srečo nam ni treba čakati, da nanj naletimo; lahko ga poiščemo. Strahospoštovanje je povsod okoli nas. Le vedeti moramo, kje ga iskati.

Skupaj z Virginio Sturm, nevroznanstvenico z Univerze v Kaliforniji, San Francisco, sem preučevala učinke »sprehoda, polnega strahospoštovanja«. Ena skupina preiskovancev se je osem tednov tedensko sprehajala; druga skupina je počela enako, vendar z nekaj navodili: prebudite svoj otroški občutek čudenja in si predstavljajte, da vse vidite prvič. Med vsakim sprehodom si vzemite trenutek, da opazite prostranost stvari – na primer, ko gledate panoramski razgled ali podrobnosti rože. In pojdite nekam na novo ali poskusite prepoznati nove značilnosti istega starega kraja. Vsi udeleženci so poročali o svoji sreči, tesnobi in depresiji ter med sprehodi posneli selfije.

Ugotovili smo, da so pohodniki, ki so občudovali strahospoštovanje, z vsakim tednom čutili večje strahospoštovanje. Morda bi si mislili, da se bo njihova sposobnost strahospoštovanja začela zmanjševati: to je znano kot zakon hedonistične prilagoditve, da določeni užitki ali dosežki – nova služba, večje stanovanje – sčasoma izgubljajo nekaj svojega vznemirjenja. Toda bolj ko strahospoštovanje prakticiramo, se zdi, da postaja bogatejše.

Našli smo tudi dokaze, da se lahko jaz razširi v okolje. V stanju občudovanja vrednega sprehoda so selfiji ljudi vse manj vključevali v jaz. Sčasoma so se subjekti umaknili na stran in prikazovali več zunanjega okolja – ulični vogal v San Franciscu, drevesa, skale ob Tihem oceanu. Med našo študijo so občudovanja vredni sprehodi poročali o manjši vsakodnevni stiski in več prosocialnih čustvih, kot sta sočutje in zabava.

Skoraj tri leta po začetku pandemije, zaradi katere se mnogi med nami počutimo nemočne in majhne, ​​se iskanje neizmernega in skrivnostnega morda ne zdi privlačno. Toda pogosto nam lahko soočanje s tistim, kar je preobremenjujoče, stvari postavi v perspektivo. Strmenje v zvezdnato nebo; pogled na skulpturo, ki nas naježi; poslušanje mešanice instrumentov, ki se združujejo v eno kompleksno, srhljivo melodijo – te izkušnje nas spomnijo, da smo del nečesa, kar bo obstajalo še dolgo po nas. Dobro nam je, če se odpremo strahospoštovanju, kjer koli ga najdemo, četudi le za trenutek ali dva.

I practiced this day 1 of the pandemic in California. I work with seniors and that day we went from 3'-6' in a matter of hours. I had already watched a 60 minutes years prior that said "It is a matter of WHEN, not IF regarding viruses and a global pandemic" I unfortunately paid attention. I took pictures of all the different trees in my neighborhood with intent to one day sketch them. I think I actually sketched one.

I finished reading Dacher Keltner's book and am glad to have come across this excerpt. It reminds me there is so much more to find awe in and around me. I need to make it a weekly habit to take these awe walks more often. Thanks for the reminder.

I am in awe of life. I walk 4 days in the park. Other days are mass days. I notice the sunrise. Every morning it's different. The ducks and their antics. The singing birds. The flow of the lake. The diamonds shimmering on the lake (sunlight on the water) they sparkle. One special day a bird was singing on a branch. I stopped to listen and made a video. For several minutes, he sang just for me. Then, he just flew away. I stop to inspect the new blossoms on the trees, the intense greenery of the grass after a few days rain. We now have a squirrel or two. A pure white feather on the ground. Things that most walkers just pass by. Sadly someone (evil person) killed a mother duck but her 7 children were teens. They are taking care of each other, and growing well. Always together. Some other 'noticing people' and I call them the 7 warriors. We carry cracked corn for them, and pray they stay safe. I can find something new everyday...for 25 years. Praise God. Thank you.

What a gift on this day, which had been called Peace Day until Sept 11, 2001, as two planes plowed through - one and then the other - the Twin Towers. We were struck with awe and wonder. Talk about transcendence... Thank you.

I feel an expansion of energy in my head when in awe. This is relatively new after many years practicing yoga. I get the same expansion when playing my native American flute.
