我的意思是,读者必须具备天赋。实际上,需要相当的天赋,因为即使是最有天赋的读者也会发现文学的疆域崎岖难行。我们当中有多少人能像卡夫卡那样感受到世界,觉得世界被压缩得难以想象,以至于无法从一个村庄骑马到另一个村庄?又有多少人能像博尔赫斯那样想象一个没有名词的世界?有多少人愿意像狄更斯那样情感丰富,或者像格雷厄姆·格林那样认真对待宗教信仰?我们当中又有多少人拥有佐拉·尼尔·赫斯顿那样感受快乐的能力,或者像道格拉斯·库普兰那样对未来充满信心?谁能敏锐地捕捉到福楼拜最细微的差别,或者拥有足够的耐心和毅力去追随大卫·福斯特·华莱士错综复杂的循环往复的思维轨迹?写作所需的技巧,阅读也同样需要。读者让作家失望的次数,和作家让读者失望的次数一样多。读者如果仍然相信那句老生常谈,认为小说就是能引起共鸣的东西,作家就是那些在你想要寻求认同和强化自身世界观时才会去找的人,那就大错特错了。小说的确能做到这一点,但这不过是更深层次魔法中的一个障眼法。要想成为更好的读者和作家,我们必须对彼此提出更高的要求。

Fine, thoughtful piece by Zadie Smith. However, I'm not sure I believe, or want to believe, that "Reading, done properly, is every bit as tough as writing." Yes, it takes great attention and even well-focused repetition to comprehend what a good writer is trying to say. But the conception and writing and re-writing, and re-writing again is, I think, so much "tougher" than even the best reading. But what the hell do I know.
