Folk køber iPhones for at være universelt forbundet og have et væld af fede funktioner lige ved hånden. Men som den vise munk, pastor Heng Sure, engang sagde, findes alt, hvad vi skaber i silicium, allerede i kulstof. Jeg vil tilføje, at siliciumteknologien i bedste fald er en dårlig kopi.
Så hvordan udnytter man præcis den vidunderlige kulfiberteknologi, man bærer rundt på sig hele tiden? Meditation er et fænomenalt værktøj til netop det. Her er fem områder, hvor meditation slår en iPhone.
1. Forbindelse
Sandheden er, at du ikke rigtig kan få kontakt med andre, medmindre du er i kontakt med dig selv. iPhonen tillader og opfordrer dig til at være marginalt til stede, når du er fysisk fraværende, og marginalt fraværende, når du er fysisk til stede.
Meditation bringer dig tilbage i kontakt med dig selv og hjælper dig med at være til stede. Punktum. Nogle gange er mediterende så til stede, at de endda er til stede, når de er fraværende! Og det gør deres evne til at forbinde langt mere omfattende end iPhonen tillader.
2. Sociale netværk
Lad os se det i øjnene: Twitter er ofte mest tilfældige stumper af irrelevante tanker, som man overfladisk følger fra folk, man ikke altid kender. At Facebooks brugerbase overstiger befolkningen i de fleste lande, og at 50% af brugerne besøger siden hver dag, tyder på, at der er noget vanedannende og faustisk over uhæmmet brug, da over 800 millioner mennesker konkurrerer om at se ud til at have det sjovest, mens de samler stadigt flere 'venner'.
Bag deres popularitet ligger myten om, at kvantitet opvejer kvalitet.
Hvor mange af dine Facebook-venner kunne du ringe til i en knibe klokken 3 om natten? Hvor mange tweets ville du tænke over i længere tid end en opmærksomhedsspændvidde på 160 tegn?
Sandheden er, at det er kvalitet, der tæller, og meditation letter sygdommen ved et tilfældigt sind for at tilføje øget kvalitet og relevans til 'mentale tweets'. Tilfældige tanker genbruges langsomt i den mentale jord og gøder de tanker, der er værd at pleje, efterhånden som opmærksomheden stabiliseres og intensiveres. Den voksende lettelse, man føler fra alt det kaos, der plasker rundt i dit hoved, begynder at opbygge sympati for andre menneskers kampe. Du begynder selv at blive en person, der er villig til at komme til undsætning klokken 3 om natten, eller bare hjælper med at gøre folk omkring dig lidt gladere, og det begynder at give dig dybere venner, der er villige til at reagere på samme måde.
Pludselig har du det rigtig sjovt, uanset hvor du er, uden tid tilbage til at tweete om det, tage billeder til Facebook eller passivt stalke andre menneskers liv. Fugle af samme slags flokkes sammen, så du snart er omgivet af ligesindede, hvilket baner vejen for tilfældige forbindelser , der giver dig gåsehud på måder, som det aldrig kan at få kontakt med din bedste ven fra 2. klasse eller din ulykkeligt hemmelige elsker fra skoleballet på Facebook.
3. Funktioner og funktionalitet
Er iPhones 5-megapixel kamera ikke nok for dig? Hvad med de 324 megapixel- ækvivalenter, der svarer til det menneskelige øje? Ikke nok lagerplads på din iPhone til den slags billeder? Ingen kender en god måde at beregne den menneskelige hjernes lagerplads på, men troværdige gæt siger, at den kan indeholde 1 til 1000 terabyte information. Kan du ikke huske så meget, siger du? Meditation forbedrer hukommelsen , vender hukommelsestab og forsinker eller forebygger Alzheimers og demens. Hvad med GPS? Meditation jordner dig virkelig og hjælper dig med at finde ud af, hvor du er, og hvor du er på vej hen. Hvad med apps og spil? Meditation begynder at låse op for de spil, du spiller bedst, og åbner dig op for mere produktive applikationer.
4. Miljø
Når planlagt forældelse indhenter dig, er din iPhone tættere på at blive e-affald, fuld af giftige kemikalier, som Californien anser for at være farligt affald. Sørg for at genbruge den, når du er færdig med at spille, og mind de andre om også at gøre det samme.
I mellemtiden bidrager meditation ikke til dit fodaftryk på planeten, men det kan bare mildne det. Der er ikke meget forskning på dette, men der findes en masse anekdotisk bevismateriale, der viser, at du vil begynde at føle behov for færre materielle ting. Og det er godt for planeten!
5. Omkostninger
Med alle dine smarte dataabonnementer og minutter kan du bruge $5 eller mere om dagen på din iPhone. Meditation er gratis, medmindre du betaler for at lære eller deltage i et kursus (og der er nogle, som f.eks. Vipassana , hvor dine omkostninger allerede er dækket, og du kun betaler videre, hvis du vil). Og hvis du er seriøs omkring at praktisere, begynder meditation at betale sig, da alt det fokus gør dig mere produktiv, kreativ, indsigtsfuld og energisk. Jeg vil kalde det en fantastisk investering i ethvert økonomisk klima. :)
Kort sagt er meditation en uovertruffen teknologi, der overgår iPhone med stormskridt. For at være retfærdig forstærker enhver teknologi blot den viljestyrke, du lægger bag den, og det er muligt at bruge ting som iPhone, Twitter og Facebook, samtidig med at de minimerer deres ulemper, ligesom det er muligt at misbruge meditation.
Alligevel er det uendeligt mere fascinerende at finde ud af det blændende potentiale i vores medfødte kulstofteknologi end at lege med siliciumteknologi, og det vil få mig til at vende tilbage til min pude i de kommende år.

MBJYou raise a good point in your usual delightful, insightful way.As a recipient of so much proselytizing chatter for both the iPhone and meditation, I’m sure it would be a relief to silence the buzz around either. My post was aimed at muzzling at least half our common harassers in a light-hearted way more than anything else. Even the comparison I make establishes a false choice between the options, especially when considering how many iPhone-using meditators commented on the post.As for shilling meditation on the attention-deficited internet, its a little bit like putting a helmet on a narcoleptic: its bound to be awkward, doesn’t really solve the problem, but might just stop a head crackin’. While I wasn’t really trying to be much of a serious meditation monger, I’m not that uncomfortable with the legitimate clunky-ness of it all I do agree that serious conversations about meditation are best kept private, but if anything around this post could be considered to have turned into viral advocacy and promotion, its something on the scale of a cold sore on a smallpox patient. Its public only in the way that a conversation in the corner of a room at a loud party is: virtually private because so few people care to quiet down and listen!

(Meditation, it must be said, has enjoyed a several-millennium longer run than the iPhone. Its persistence and longevity is itself strong evidence in favor of your thesis. Still, one suspects that it went through periods where, as with the second generation Macs, the only users were esoteric freaks who could only find “software” — to piggyback on your extended technology metaphor — at the spiritual equivalent of garage sales.)Like so many things, meditation and iPhones are useful tools in the hands of skilled, purposeful people. Hospital physicians, for example, are able to carry comprehensive pharmaceutical reference material in their pockets with the iPhone as they visit patient bedsides; and thoughtful practitioners of self-exploration are able to dig deeper with meditation. And yet, both are supremely annoying in the hands of poseurs.The nice thing about both meditation and the iPhone is that both are genuinely good tools; it’s hard to really criticize either. Rahul, this is excellent. One thought on environment...meditation also helps deal with our personal unplanned obsolescence allowing us to age more gracefully without letting pain create toxic ripples of suffering around us.
