7 Nasvetov Za Boj Proti Smrtonosnemu občutku dolgčasa

Eden od zavetnikov mojega projekta Srečnejši doma , Samuel Johnson, je zapisal: »S preučevanjem majhnih stvari dosežemo veliko umetnost imeti čim manj bede in čim več sreče.«

Ena »majhna stvar«, ki je lahko vir nesreče, je dolgčas. Čakanje v prometu. Čakanje na podzemno železnico. Pomivanje posode. Čakanje v zdravniški ordinaciji. Poslušanje trinajstletnice, ki vam predstavlja različne možnosti oblačil za ta dan.

Tukaj je sedem nasvetov za preoblikovanje trenutka. Tudi če se situaciji ne morete izogniti, jo lahko s preoblikovanjem svojih čustev do nje spremenite.

1. Za dejavnostjo, ki vas dolgočasi, dodajte besedo »meditacija«. (To je moj izum.) Če ste med čakanjem na avtobus nestrpni, si recite, da izvajate »meditacijo čakanja na avtobus«. Če stojite v počasni vrsti v lekarni, izvajate »meditacijo čakanja v vrsti«. Že samo izgovor teh besed me navdaja z občutkom zelo duhovnosti, vzvišenosti in modrosti.

2. Poglobite se v to. Kot pravijo, če se ne morete izvleči iz nečesa, se vanj vključite. Diane Arbus je zapisala: »Kitajci imajo teorijo, da dolgčas spremenite v fascinacijo, in mislim, da drži.« Če je nekaj dolgočasno dve minuti, to počnite štiri minute. Če je še vedno dolgočasno, to počnite osem minut, nato šestnajst in tako naprej. Sčasoma odkrijete, da sploh ni dolgočasno. Če me del moje raziskave ne zanima – kot je kampanja Dardanele za Štirideset načinov, kako pogledati Winstona Churchilla – preberem celo knjigo o tem in potem me to postane zanimivo. Isto načelo velja pri opravljanju dolgočasnih ali nadležnih opravil, kot je pranje perila.

3. Vzemite perspektivo novinarja ali znanstvenika. Resnično preučite, kaj je okoli vas. Kaj imajo ljudje oblečeno, kako je videti notranjost stavb, kakšne zvoke slišite, kaj prikazujejo oglasi? Če uporabite svoje analitične sposobnosti, lahko ustvarite skoraj vse zanimivo. Paradoksalno sem ugotovil, da me je razumevanje teorije, zakaj me čakanje v vrsti spravlja ob pamet, naredilo veliko bolj strpnega do čakanja v vrsti.

4. Poiščite si zatočišče. Načrtujte miselno pot pobega. Pomislite na nekaj prijetnega ali vznemirljivega (ne na svoj seznam opravil!). Preglejte fotografije svojih otrok na telefonu (študije kažejo, da ogled fotografij ljubljenih močno izboljša razpoloženje). Poslušajte zvočno knjigo.

5. Poiščite način, kako se počutiti hvaležne. Veliko bolje je biti dolgočasen med čakanjem v zdravniški ordinaciji kot pa biti v agoniji negotovosti glede rezultatov testov. Bolj zabavno je sedeti za mizo za zajtrk in se pogovarjati o oblačilih kot biti zdoma na poslovnem potovanju. Morda se druga vrsta v lekarni premika še počasneje. Itd.

6. Razmislite: »Ali sem jaz dolgočasen?« je pripomnil La Rochefoucauld: »Vedno se dolgočasimo s tistimi, ki jih dolgočasimo sami.« Na to se spomnim, ko se z nekom dolgočasim!

7. In seveda, vedno prinesite s seboj knjigo (v fizični ali virtualni obliki).

Good ideas! However, I usually do not feel bored. While waiting, I feel that I cannot do anything more about the task I m waiting for. Then I start enjoying the moment: get lost in my dreams and plan for interesting things.

I think you bring up a good point, many of the apparently "popular" kids are actually quite man, as you describe. However I think that there are many, many kids who are popular because they are kind and likeable. I think your point brings up an important difference in the way we think about popularity though. In some schools the nicest students are the most popular, in other schools it is the most athletic, or the richest. Perhaps it is a reflection on the basic values of the community that the school is situated in, in a higher socio-economic area the value of social status/power may out-weigh the value of kindness to others. Whereas in a rural/religious school district the value of kindness may out-weigh the value of material status. I think it is all very contextual.

I think it was Albert Einstein who talked about never being bored. (I may not have quote exactly right, but it's close...) "Whenever I am in a situation that I find boring I simply retreat into a small corner of my mind and there I am very content." Boredom is proof of a lack of imagination. My favorite out: doodling...

Does anyone have ideas for elementary students? I teach elementary gifted students. As much as we are able, teachers will offer more challenging material, but sometimes students have to sit through material they already know and/or feel is not important. Boredom is a regular discussion topic in my classroom. I am going to take this article and have the students determine how they can adapt some of these ideas to be classroom friendly. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly, I never get bored. I always have a book with me to read in the doctor's or dentist's office, and my goals and dreams keep me busy, too. As I'm sitting and contemplating, I take notes because new ideas always come up to make my goals even better. When I'm sitting in traffic, I see it as an opportunity to look around and observe the view. I love those moments - it's a breather for me.

I love the idea of creating a meditation while standing in line, though. Great idea Gretchen!

I am never bored. I always have a book to read or I'll strike up conversation with someone or at home I have plenty to do that's fun/interesting (reading, connecting with good friends via email/calls), doing my art, organizing something that needs tackling, playing with my dog, making my home environment more enjoyable, getting rid of unwanted/used stuff, etc. Napping is a good one too!
