Je, Gandhi Angetumia Mitandao Ya Kijamii?

Ikiwa Gandhi angekuwa hai leo, angetumia mitandao ya kijamii? Kamwe hakuwa mpinga teknolojia, au hata kupinga mabadiliko ya nyakati. Kinyume kabisa, kwa kweli. Ikiwa teknolojia za mtandao na mitandao ya kijamii zingekuwepo, bila shaka angezikumbatia -- lakini kwa kuzingatia uwezo na udhaifu wao.

Shujaa yeyote wa mabadiliko ya kijamii hufaulu kufanya mambo matatu ya msingi -- kuongeza ufahamu, kuunda athari, na kubadilisha moyo.

Kwa ufahamu, mtandao umekuwa wa ajabu kabisa. Tuna matrilioni ya urafiki mpya mtandaoni; Facebook hutoa nambari za kila siku za jinsi watu huanzisha urafiki huo katika dini na maeneo yanayokinzana. Nambari za leo: India-Pakistani: 199,721, Israel-Palestine: 39,497, Ugiriki-Uturuki: 7,988 Zaidi ya nusu ya watu duniani sasa wako kwenye mitandao ya kijamii, na inaongezeka kila siku; iPhones nyingi zaidi zinazalishwa kila siku kuliko idadi ya watu wanaozaliwa. Ikiwa Facebook ingekuwa nchi, ingekuwa ya tatu kwa ukubwa duniani. Na ulimwengu huu wote wa mtandaoni umejaa ubinafsi unaozalisha. Saa moja ya video inapakiwa kila sekunde -- na kwa pamoja, tunazalisha maudhui zaidi katika miaka 5 kuliko tulivyofanya tangu mwanzo hadi 2003. Zaidi ya watumiaji milioni 68 hushiriki na kupenda maudhui kila siku. Ikiwa Wikipedia ingekuwa kitabu, ingekuwa na urefu wa kurasa milioni 2.25; yote bila malipo, na zaidi ya saa milioni 100 za kujitolea zimechangwa kwenye Wikipedia pekee. Haya yote yanatengeneza jukwaa la ajabu la kueneza mawazo na maudhui, na uendeshaji mdogo sana.

Kwa athari za kijamii, matumizi ya Mtandao yamechanganywa. Hatuhitaji kwenda mbali zaidi ya Majira ya Majira ya Kuchipua ya Kiarabu ili kuona uwezo wake wa ajabu. Hata hivyo, pia imezua matatizo mengi mapya, kuanzia unyanyasaji wa mtandaoni hadi "ulegevu" hadi kupunguza muda wetu wa kuzingatia. Walianzisha kikundi cha FaceBook na wakaomba kila mtu atume "chupi za pinki" kwa maafisa wa serikali. Ilienea kama moto wa nyika. Maafisa wa serikali ya mji huo mdogo walianza kupokea mamia na mamia ya chupi za pinki. Sio tu Siku ya wapendanao, lakini iliendelea kila siku. Kwa kweli hawakujua jinsi ya kujibu. Chupi iliendelea kuja na kuja. Hadi hatimaye, walichukua hatua na kuwafunga jela wavamizi waliokuwa wakiwanyanyasa wanawake hao. Ikawa kesi muhimu kuhusu ufanisi wa kampeni za mtandaoni za msingi, zinazoendeshwa na nguvu ya miunganisho iliyosambazwa.

Mtandao, basi, ni mzuri kwa kueneza ufahamu na unaweza kuwa na nguvu kabisa katika suala la athari zake pia. Ambapo inakosa, ingawa, ni kipengele cha tatu - mabadiliko.

Urafiki wa mtandaoni unaweza tu kwenda mbali. Kuna wakulima milioni 75 zaidi kwenye Farmville kuliko katika ulimwengu wa kweli. Farmville si kilimo, kama vile mahusiano ya mtandaoni si sawa na urafiki wa "maisha halisi". Kwa yenyewe, urafiki wa mtandaoni ni dhaifu sana. Kwa muundo, Facebook ingependelea utume teddy bear mtandaoni kwa rafiki kuliko kwenda nje ya mtandao wao na kukumbatia. Hakuna dhidi ya dubu teddy mtandaoni, lakini haiwezi kuchukua nafasi ya kukumbatia. :) Sayansi hutuambia kwamba oxytocin hutolewa katika akili zetu tunapoingiliana na wengine kwa njia ya kujitolea -- hutufanya tujisikie vizuri, inaboresha afya zetu, na huongeza hali yetu ya ustawi.

Ikiwa kuakisi matukio kama haya mtandaoni kunapunguza mabadiliko ya ndani, ni maswali gani tunahitaji kuuliza? Je, ikiwa suluhisho mojawapo ni mseto unaohusisha muunganisho wa kimataifa wa Mtandao na oxytocin ya urafiki wa ndani? Dot-coms hawatauliza swali hilo kwa vile wanachochewa tu kuelekea maendeleo ya mtandaoni; mashirika ya kitamaduni kwa kawaida hayako katika nafasi ya kuchunguza uchunguzi huo kwa kuwa hayako kwenye makali ya mageuzi ya kiteknolojia. Nani atauliza maswali hayo? Hatujui bado, lakini tunahitaji kuwauliza.

Ikiwa tutazingatia wanamapinduzi wa kina wa wakati wetu, kutoka kwa Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. na Cesar Chavez hadi kwa Mama Teresa, Dalai Lama, na Aung San Suu Kyi -- sifa mahususi ya uongozi wao haikuwa tu ufahamu wao au athari za kampeni zao. Wanamkakati wengine wengi wanaweza kuwa wamefanya vizuri zaidi; nguvu zao zilikuwa katika mabadiliko yao ya ndani, ambayo yaliwapa uwezo wa kugusa mioyo ya jumuiya zao. Ni muhimu kutazama video kuhusu jinsi sigara inaweza kudhuru mwili wako; huo ni ufahamu. Ni muhimu kujiandikisha katika programu inayokupa mabaka ya nikotini ili kuacha kuvuta sigara; hiyo ni athari. Nini mabadiliko hufanya ni kubadilisha muundo wa uraibu kabisa; kubadilisha tabia za moyo wako ilikuwa ni fikra ya kweli ya haya makubwa ya mabadiliko ya kijamii.

Wachezaji wa mpira wa kikapu mara nyingi watafunga kikapu, kufanyiwa madhambi na kupiga kelele "Na moja!" wakipata nafasi ya kupata pointi hiyo ya tatu. Hii ni hatua ya tatu. Uanaharakati -- na moja!

Ikiwa tunataka kuwa na mapinduzi endelevu ambayo yanadumu kwa vizazi, teknolojia zetu za kisasa zinapaswa kuundwa kwa kipengele hiki cha mabadiliko ya ndani. Kila mmoja wa mashujaa hao wa utumishi wa hadithi alianza kwa kujibadilisha katika ngazi ya mizizi, na licha ya kuongoza mapinduzi makubwa, daima aliweka mbele na katikati. Vile vile, tunapohusika katika kilele cha mageuzi yetu wenyewe, hatuwezi kujizuia kupanua kutoka kwa kujielekeza hadi mwelekeo mwingine. Kisha tunahudumu kutoka mahali pa utele, ambayo ina maana tunahudumu kwa furaha na shukrani. Tunaheshimu muunganisho wetu wa kina na, tunapopatana na ufunuo wa asili ambao ni mkubwa kuliko sisi, tunaendelea kujibadilisha. Mabadiliko ya nje yanayotokana na aina hii ya kitanzi chanya cha maoni ni tofauti kimsingi.
Inapopangwa, miundo kama hii inayoendeshwa na mabadiliko ya ndani hufanya kazi kwenye makutano ya miduara mitatu mikubwa: mabadiliko ya nje, mabadiliko ya kimfumo na mabadiliko ya kibinafsi. Uanaharakati mara nyingi hufafanuliwa katika makutano ya mabadiliko ya nje na mabadiliko ya kimfumo, lakini haujakamilika bila kipengele cha mabadiliko yetu ya ndani. Ni wazo muhimu sana, lakini bado hatuna neno kwa hilo. Kwa hivyo tulitengeneza neno letu wenyewe.
Giftivism: mazoezi ya vitendo vya ukarimu sana vinavyobadilisha ulimwengu. Inafanya kazi kwa kubadilisha moyo wa kitengeneza mabadiliko, hata zaidi ya athari kwa walengwa wake wa nje. Kipimo muhimu cha karama ni kwamba inafanya kazi kuinua 100%. Haina maadui. Ni fadhili bila masharti kwa kila mtu. Gandhi alikuwa akiiita Sarvodaya -- ustawi wa watu wote. Si wazo geni, halina hakimiliki wala haitawahi kuwa IPO. "Ni mzee kama vilima," Gandhi alikuwa akisema.

Gandhi alipokuwa na umri wa miaka 70 hivi, alikuwa akitoa hotuba kwa maelfu kadhaa ya watu katika mji mdogo wa Rajkot. Katikati ya mazungumzo hayo, genge la "majambazi" 600 lilivuruga mkusanyiko huo ili kufanya mashambulizi makali dhidi ya wasikilizaji. Watu hawakujua la kufanya. Kwa upande mmoja, walikuwa wakimsikiliza mtume wa kutotumia nguvu na kwa upande mwingine kulikuwa na majambazi hawa waliotaka kutawala kwa vurugu. Machafuko yalitokea kila mahali. Watu waliumia sana; gari la wagonjwa na ving'ora vya polisi vilikuwa vikilia kwa nguvu. Katikati ya haya yote, Gandhi alikuwa bado jukwaani; akafumba macho na kuanza kuomba na kutafakari; uso wake ulikuwa umetulia kabisa lakini mwili wake ulikuwa ukitetemeka, pengine kutokana na hali mbaya ya eneo hilo. Alipofumbua macho, aliwafahamisha waandaaji kuwa anataka kuzungumza na kiongozi wa majambazi hao. Kuchanganyikiwa kulizuka kwa vile wengi waliogopa kufichua Gandhi kwa vurugu; lakini Gandhi hakusisitiza tu, bali alichagua kukutana naye peke yake. Waandaaji waliingiwa na hofu Gandhi alipoendelea kukutana na kiongozi wa genge hilo. Bal Kalelkar mwenye umri wa miaka 26 alishuhudia mabadilishano haya na baadaye aliandika : "Kwa mshangao wa kila mtu vurugu za majambazi ziliyeyuka kama barafu. Kiongozi wa genge hilo alisimama mbele ya Gandhi-ji akiwa amekunja mikono ... Jioni hiyo alitembea hadi nyumbani huku mkono mmoja ukiwa begani mwa kiongozi wa genge hilo."

Hiyo ndiyo nguvu ya mabadiliko ya ndani. Hiyo ni giftvism.

Leo, mitandao ya kijamii na teknolojia ya mtandao ni mali ya ajabu kwetu sote. Gandhi bila shaka angewakumbatia. Lakini miundo yao inabidi iwekwe mahali pa uwezo wetu mkuu -- mabadiliko ya ndani. Tunapaswa kuhakikisha kwamba teknolojia zetu zote zinaendelea kuripoti kwa ubinadamu wetu wa pamoja na si vinginevyo.

Simply amazing to read this....am in the middle of helping to design a workshop for human rights activists from India and was thinking, "How can I incorporate the perceived fuzzy idea of compassion and love into the heart of the workshop?"  I think I will use this piece as a prompt...thank you!

Thanks Nipun.  Insightful.   "Inner-transformation driven designs work at the intersection of three big circles: outer change, systemic change and personal change. "    The religious folks growing up never talk that much about activism, outer change.  And the traditional activists rarely talk about inner transformation.  That bridge, that commitment to all three circles is a very profound and important message.

You ask, "Who will ask those questions?" I'm happy to say I've spent the past 3 days (+1 more tomorrow) at the Wisdom 2.0 Conference, where technology and mindfulness leaders have come together to ask exactly those questions. Thupten Jimpa (in conversation with Pierre Omidyar) seemed to sum it up nicely by calling for technology users to exercise mindful self-discipline in their use of the technology, and asking for technology creators to consciously consider social responsibility as they create and distribute their products and services.

I just wonder if Facebook would be willing to provide equal space to charities that offer giving opportunities based on the on line behavior of each client or better yet random charities receive equal footing to paid advertisers. These charities may ask for money and or service. This would mean  not maximizing the space with paid advertisements but "social profit" would soar and I promise you inner transformation would be fostered. Paypal has made my giving much easier. Still my inner transformation comes from time on the cushion. Dogen said meditation is enlightenment. I vow to try.

For sure, unconditional giving is the most radical idea and practice that I have ever come across. Thanks to the author for picking that out as the ingredient much needed in all domains that concern us and our planet. It is no doubt the most difficult thing to even have this perspective in a given moment as we are heavily conditioned otherwise. Besides the mental block, it has so many practical difficulties too. So, I think it is important for every person to do their own small acts of giftvism in any context they can and generate an ocean of data of its ripples. Here is a chance for us to indulge in practice and theory side by side without any burden of the past, without divisions, without worries about resource, impact... without any condition, one small act of gifting ourselves in any way we can everyday. Now, where do I send my daily report to humanity? Helpothers.org I suppose :)

Very well written.Social transformation can happen irrespective of Social media.But depending on technology to change is really time consuming.Each one us can change if we are willing to change.

Thank you so much , it is the truth . People will transform only when they see the transformation of the change maker , as they saw in Gandhi , Mother Teresa , Martin Luther King and many others who followed them . They set an example of their own lives for others to follow .
