겸손하세요. 땅에 가까이 하세요. 그것이 이 존재의 핵심이라고 들었습니다.
그래서 저는 수년간 재정적으로, 육체적으로, 심리적으로 모든 면에서 터질 듯한 세상에서 "덜할수록 더 좋다"는 삶을 살려고 노력해 왔습니다.
그런 감정은 "가격 대비 더 좋은 상품"이나 2대 1 할인 혜택에 묻혀 버리는 경향이 있습니다.
확보하고 확장해야 할 필요성이 있는 것 같습니다. 이는 우리의 개인적, 물질적 삶에서만 나타나는 것이 아닙니다. 스타트업은 규모를 확장하고 싶어 합니다. 이것이 그들에게 가장 중요한 단계입니다. 어떻게 확장할 수 있을까요? 어떻게 자동화하여 프로세스 속도를 높일 수 있을까요?
비영리 단체는 "영향" 보고서를 위한 데이터를 수집해야 하며, 이를 통해 자신의 아이디어가 혁신적일 뿐만 아니라 확장 가능하다는 것을 보여줘야 합니다.
성장은 숫자의 게임이며, 가능하다면 기하급수적으로 성장해야 합니다. 성공의 신호는 바로 숫자의 성장입니다.
모든 것에는 확장성이 필요합니다. 확장성은 이제 지속 가능성과 같습니다. 단순한 개념이 지나치게 추상적이고 복잡해진 것이죠.
하지만 예전에는 지속 가능했던 것들이 더 이상 지속 가능하지 않습니다. 마치 롤러코스터처럼 빠르게 변하는 세상에 살고 있기 때문입니다. 소도시 기업들은 "규모 확장"이 어렵거나, 아니면 규모 확장을 원하지 않기 때문에 거대 기업에 맞서 힘겨워합니다. 따라서 소비자로서 우리는 지역 "브랜드"를 선택할지, 아니면 대기업을 선택할지 결정해야 합니다. 둘 중 하나일 뿐인 것 같습니다.
그렇다면 확장성이 정말 그렇게 중요한 초점이 되어야 할까요?
지속 가능한 삶은 더 작은 삶입니다. 공동체, 지구, 그리고 서로와 조화를 이루는 삶입니다. 확장 가능한 삶은 우리 자신을 넘어서는 확장을 요구합니다.
오늘날 비영리 단체가 상당한 보조금을 확보하려면 해당 모델이 25만 명의 지역 주민에게만 적용되는 것이 아니라 수백만 명에게까지 도달할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있음을 입증해야 합니다. 로스앤젤레스 도심 지역뿐만 아니라 디트로이트에도 적합하며, 가뭄에 시달리는 아프리카 사헬 지역뿐만 아니라 인도 서부의 건조 지대에서도 적용 가능합니다.
벤처는 지역 사회를 넘어 수백, 수천, 아니 수백만 명의 삶에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 역량을 갖추고 있을 때 성공적입니다. 사업은 파생 사업을 펼칠 때 성공이라고 불립니다.
규모는 우리 모두가 열망해야 할 것입니다. 투자자들이 찾고 있는 것, 보조금 지급 기관들이 찾고 있는 것, 그리고 기업가들이 갈망하는 것이 바로 그것입니다.
하지만 우리는 스스로에게 질문해야 합니다. 이 모든 것에는 한계가 있을까요? 확장성이 정말로 우리의 문제를 해결할 수 있을까요? 다양한 사회적 기업이 각자의 고유한 방식으로 지역 문제를 해결하는 것은 불가능할까요? 기업이 지역/광역 차원에서 성장을 마무리하고 지역 사회, 자원, 농업, 인적 자본을 기반으로 번영하는 것은 불가능할까요?
전국에 소규모 기업들을 복제할 수는 없을까요? 하나의 중앙 생산 및 서비스 단위를 두는 대신, 더 작고 포용적인 생태계를 만들 수는 없을까요?
예를 들어, 이전 칼럼에서 샌프란시스코의 Bicycle Coffee Co.에 대해 썼습니다. 이 회사는 커피를 직접 로스팅하여 자전거로 배달하기로 했습니다. 즉, 송아지가 허락하는 한, 그 이상은 할 수 없다는 뜻입니다.
하지만 이 회사는 이미 여러 해외 벤처 기업들의 접촉을 받고 있으며, 그들의 사업 모델을 전 세계 여러 도시로 확장할 것을 제안받고 있습니다. 그렇다면 이 회사는 규모를 확장할 수 있을까요, 아니면 베이 지역 근처에만 머물게 될까요?
여기서 규모란 현지화된 팀, 지역 자원, 그리고 주변 문화를 흡수하여 비즈니스 모델을 재창조하는 것을 의미할 수 있습니다. 이는 각기 다른 모습을 지닌 소규모 기업을 만드는 것을 의미합니다. 중앙 공급망이나 중앙 생산 체계는 없지만, 규모는 여전히 가능합니다.
우리는 스스로를 멈출 수 있을까? 스스로를 억제할 수 있을까? 설령 그럴 여유가 있고, 공짜라고 해도, 심지어 우리 문 앞에 놓여 있다고 해도. 우리는 외면할 수 있을까? 우리는 새로운 규모를 만들어낼 수 있을까? 땅의 거칠음과 이웃들의 고난, 그리고 경작된 땅의 한계 안에서, 더 작고, 더 겸손하고, 더 먼지 쌓인 규모를.
우리는 밖으로 확장하는 대신, 우리 자신과 서로 간의 유대감을 깊게 하는 내면을 바라보는 꿈을 꿀 수 있을까요?
아마도 이는 우리가 성장에 대해 다시 생각해 볼 필요가 있다는 것을 의미합니다.

Truly agree with this post. It is time to rethink and look for the scale inwards.
Love this post - I really agree that scale is not always feasible and perhaps should not be so celebrated. Making a true and deep impact in 1 community can sometimes be harder than making a superficial impact on a large scale (which is what often happens). It becomes more about the outputs than the impact.
Under the present condition, it's way to late to SCALE BACK. The world is on a roller coaster ride to bigness. :(

I think there is a lack of understanding. It was yesterday i said
everything are agreeable. Take that easy and once problem is solved, let
it be solved.

Diversity means an ecosystem is healthy. Diversity in de-centralized small scale enterprises would expand our ability to imagine and create as we are inspired by that which is different and soon bored by replications That would give us humans a chance to grow mentally, spiritually, open our sights and free our potentials.
The sustainable model is smaller but dustier? I think not, this isn't a backwards scaling this is conscious intent. The oversized lumbering corporate model is the dustiest for it is based on old science of compete and dominate. That premise supported "winner take all: attitudes that pushed the growth buttons. Now we have scientific evidence of our errors.
Cooperation, collaboration, whole systems health and welfare connected, interrelated patterns that are designed to expand stimulate possibilities. Instead we appear as stunned by a cancer "we" set loose to control the global economy and it is proving deadly.
The dis-ease is fed by a banking system run like a game of musical chairs, (more lose so fewer can win, until yup winner take all aka a nihilist prospect) So "they who were given the privilege to create money (debt) -have abused the privilege and our blind obedience to the dharma of growth is making us ill and shallow... how sad.
What has real value? Let us concentrate on building that up. Each community, group or person can stand up for that thing, action idea. Make noise, art, sing talk about the real stuff and engage others in the "change." . As we learn to help and trust each other we will start to feel healthier, stronger, more alive. The dis-ease will not thrive without our energy. Putting our energy into alternative paths, building for life, seeking to thrive and nurture everyone's potential will change everything else. We find what we seek, no?
