Ostanite skromni. Ostanite blizu zemlje. To je bistvo tega obstoja, so mi rekli.
In tako sem se leta boril z življenjem "manj je več" v svetu, za katerega se zdi, da poka po šivih - v vseh pogledih - finančno, fizično, psihološko.
To čustvo se ponavadi izgubi v shemah "več denarja za vaš denar", ki jih ponuja "dva za enega".
Zdi se, da je treba pridobiti in razširiti. In ne le v našem osebnem in materialnem življenju. Startupi se želijo povečati – to je zanje najbolj kritična stopnja. Kako se širimo? Kako ga robotiziramo, da lahko pospešimo proces?
Neprofitne organizacije morajo zbirati podatke za poročila o "vplivu", ki ponazarjajo, kako njihove ideje niso le inovativne, ampak tudi razširljive.
To je igra številk za rast in, če je mogoče, eksponentno rast. To je znak uspeha — številčna rast.
Vse mora imeti merilo. Razširljivost je zdaj kot trajnost – še en preprost koncept, ki je preveč abstrakten in zapleten.
Vendar tisto, kar je bilo včasih trajnostno, ne more biti več trajnostno, ker živimo v hitrosti tobogana. Podjetja v majhnih mestih se borijo proti velikanom, ker ne morejo "razširiti" ali pa tega morda nočejo. Zato se moramo kot potrošniki odločiti, ali bomo izbrali lokalno "znamko" ali korporativno? Zdi se, da je eno ali drugo.
Torej, ali bi morala biti razširljivost res tako velik poudarek?
Trajnostna življenja so manjša življenja. To so življenja, ki so usklajena s skupnostjo, z zemljo, drug z drugim. Razširljiva življenja od nas zahtevajo, da se razširimo onkraj sebe.
Dandanes mora neprofitna organizacija pridobiti pomembno donacijo, če mora ponazoriti, da njen model ni uporaben samo za lokalno prebivalstvo, na primer 250.000, ampak ima potencial, da doseže milijone. Ni primeren samo za Los Angeles, ampak tudi za Detroit. To ni mogoče samo v afriški regiji Sahel, ki jo je prizadela suša, ampak tudi v suhih deželah zahodne Indije.
Podvig je uspešen, če ima sredstva, da preseže skupnost, če lahko vpliva na stotine, tisoče, če ne milijone življenj. Podjetje se imenuje uspešno, če ima podružnice.
Obseg je nekaj, za kar bi si morali vsi prizadevati. To iščejo investitorji, to iščejo donatorji, to je tisto, po čemer hrepenijo podjetniki.
Vendar se moramo vprašati, ali obstaja meja za vse to? Ali razširljivost res rešuje naše težave? Ali ni mogoče imeti različnih socialnih podjetij, ki se lokalnih problemov lotevajo na svoj edinstven način? Ali ni mogoče, da bi podjetje omejilo svojo rast na lokalni/regionalni ravni, pri čemer bi uspevalo z lokalno skupnostjo, njenimi viri, kmetijstvom, človeškim kapitalom?
Ali ne smemo mikropodjetij namesto tega posnemati po vsej državi? Ali ne moremo namesto ene osrednje proizvodne in storitvene enote ustvariti manjših, bolj vključujočih ekosistemov?
Na primer, v prejšnji kolumni sem pisal o Bicycle Coffee Co. v San Franciscu. Odločil se je, da bo ročno pražil kavo in jo dostavljal na kolesih. To pomeni, da gre lahko samo tako daleč - kolikor jim njihova teleta dovolijo.
Toda k podjetju so se že obrnili mednarodni podvigi in jih s svojim poslovnim modelom vabili v mesta po vsem svetu. Torej, ali se povečajo ali ostanejo blizu Bay Area?
Obseg tukaj lahko pomeni ponovno ustvarjanje poslovnega modela z lokalizirano ekipo, regionalnimi viri in absorbiranjem okoliške kulture. Šlo bi za ustvarjanje mikropodjetij, ki imajo drugačne obraze, kamor pridejo. Brez centralnega vira, brez centralne proizvodnje. Toda še vedno imate lestvico?
Ali se lahko ustavimo? Ali se lahko zadržimo? Tudi če si ga lahko privoščimo, tudi če je zastonj, tudi če stoji pred našim pragom. Se lahko obrnemo stran? Ali lahko zgradimo novo lestvico - manjšo, skromnejšo, bolj zaprašeno lestvico v stiku s hrapavostjo zemlje, z boji naših sosedov, v mejah obdelane zemlje?
Ali lahko imamo sanje, ki gledajo navznoter, poglabljajo nas same in naše medsebojne vezi, namesto da se širijo navzven?
Morda to pomeni, da moramo ponovno razmisliti o rasti.

Truly agree with this post. It is time to rethink and look for the scale inwards.
Love this post - I really agree that scale is not always feasible and perhaps should not be so celebrated. Making a true and deep impact in 1 community can sometimes be harder than making a superficial impact on a large scale (which is what often happens). It becomes more about the outputs than the impact.
Under the present condition, it's way to late to SCALE BACK. The world is on a roller coaster ride to bigness. :(

Diversity means an ecosystem is healthy. Diversity in de-centralized small scale enterprises would expand our ability to imagine and create as we are inspired by that which is different and soon bored by replications That would give us humans a chance to grow mentally, spiritually, open our sights and free our potentials.
The sustainable model is smaller but dustier? I think not, this isn't a backwards scaling this is conscious intent. The oversized lumbering corporate model is the dustiest for it is based on old science of compete and dominate. That premise supported "winner take all: attitudes that pushed the growth buttons. Now we have scientific evidence of our errors.
Cooperation, collaboration, whole systems health and welfare connected, interrelated patterns that are designed to expand stimulate possibilities. Instead we appear as stunned by a cancer "we" set loose to control the global economy and it is proving deadly.
The dis-ease is fed by a banking system run like a game of musical chairs, (more lose so fewer can win, until yup winner take all aka a nihilist prospect) So "they who were given the privilege to create money (debt) -have abused the privilege and our blind obedience to the dharma of growth is making us ill and shallow... how sad.
What has real value? Let us concentrate on building that up. Each community, group or person can stand up for that thing, action idea. Make noise, art, sing talk about the real stuff and engage others in the "change." . As we learn to help and trust each other we will start to feel healthier, stronger, more alive. The dis-ease will not thrive without our energy. Putting our energy into alternative paths, building for life, seeking to thrive and nurture everyone's potential will change everything else. We find what we seek, no?
